Star Wars Mania: ‘The BB8 Dress’

As I have mentioned before, my family is pretty Star Wars crazy. Now with all the new hype about the new movies, it is very easy finding great Star Wars fabrics. Especially ones that are related to all the new releases. Since I made a Star Wars suit for my little boy, I needed something matching for my daughter and I got to work on a dress featuring BB8.

Again, apart form the basic shape of the top part for size, the dress is my own design. When I made it, I wanted to create something that went in line with the fashion that is shown in the films. Something that flows, wraps and that is not too girly. More functional and a touch military like.

The result is a dress that has a somewhat simple skirt made from a black and white herringbone pattern, covered by two ‘skirt flaps’ on each side. It has no sleeves but two straps of bright neon fabric running over the shoulder, like some sort of military badge and it has a belt that is held together by a metal closing.

I think it ended up to be a very pretty dress but it still has a bit of a tough attitude to it. What do you think?

Minions Mania: ‘The Minions Overalls Dress’

Since I made a really funky little boy suit from that bright yellow Minions fabric, I could not hold back and make a matching dress for my little girl.

I did not just want to take the fabric and turn it into a cute dress though. I wanted to make something that a female Minion would wear (do they actually exist?). So I came up with the idea of making a dress à la overalls style, perfectly in line with the jeans overalls of the latest Minions fashion trend.

I pretty much winged this one. Apart from the simple bodice part that I used to get an idea for the size, every other part of the dress was derived through experimentation. The overalls part and the top part of the dress are  attached, so the overalls cannot be worn separately. I wanted it to be a proper dress. The skirt is a simple A-line. There is a functional pocket in the front to store all those little treasures that can be picked up along the way.

It was a lot of fun making it. I hope you enjoy it as  much as we do.

Minions Mania: ‘The Minions Suit’

Last year, I made a suit from a Millennium Falcon Star Wars fabric for my little man. We are a little Star Wars crazy in this family, so the suit was an absolute hit.

So, when I stumbled over this really quirky Minions fabric the other day, I thought it would be REALLY funky to make a suit from bright yellow Minions fabric. It was so much fun seeing how much my little boy loved running around in his Star Wars Suit that I couldn’t wait to start working on a suit for another little boy. He might go crazy when he opens his Minions birthday surprise soon!

So, here it is:

As you can see from the pictures, ‘The Minions Suit’ is completely reversible. One side is made from the Minions fabric and the other is made from a matching jeans fabric. It is almost like one owns two suits that can be mixed and matched to one’s desire.

Regarding the cutting patterns, I started off using the instructions from the book ‘Sewing for Boys‘ by Shelly Figueroa and Karen LePage for my son’s Star Wars suit. The featured patterns are beautiful and the end results are very sophisticated but they are for a regular jacket and pant only.

When my little man started wearing the suit, I realized that it was quite a shame that it was not reversible. I used a really nice Star Wars fabric for the lining also and I wanted to see it more. So, I decided to change that for the next suit I would make. I experimented around a little and the end-result is now my own adjusted version of the previous pattern for the jacket and a completely new pattern for the pants. The pattern for the vest is a free one I found on The Sewing Rabbit some years ago, since the mentioned book does not feature a vest.

I hope you like my version of the suit. If you are interested in owning one, the reversible suit is now also available in my Etsy Shop.
